How to build a podcast that works even harder than you

by Courtney Reimer

It's Sunday, and you and I are both on email.

We both know our time on this Planet Earth is finite AF. Let's make the most of it, shall we?

For starters, I won't presume you have boundless moments to dedicate to 1) email generally (especially on a Sunday), 2) this email specifically, or 2) my podcast episode.

SO, I’m saving us both some time thanks to my guest this week, 10K Email Club Founder, Emily Claire Hughes, who shared this brilliant time-saving tip:

“Give people the timestamps of the best moments...and then ask their thoughts on it, and invite them to reply.”

Consider it done, my friends (and consider it my open, no-expiration invitation to reply with your thoughts/contrary opinions/other podcast recos)!

Also consider it your Monday listen, already teed us with the five parts most worthy of your time.

And yes, this tip from Emily also saved ME time by basically writing my newsletter for me this week.

We love a podcast that works harder than we do, and we love to see a glorious podcast content flywheel in action…

And your time-saving timecode cheat sheet:

09:02: Emily's advice that I stole for this very email you’re reading at this very moment

Instead of saying “here’s my latest podcast episode,” Emily suggests telling people exactly which moments are worth their time, and where to find them.

Of course I was immediately ready to experiment with that brilliant advice.

So…hi. You are currently participating in the experiment. (Thank you, by the way.)

BONUS: This tidbit made for a stellar Instagram Reel, too, if I do say so myself.

13:45: Stop feeding five separate content beasts

Your podcast, newsletter and social content do not each need a fresh supply of original ideas every time you sit down to offer proof of life & wisdom to your adoring public.

Nor should any of this require a fresh supply of bandwidth or brainpower every time, which I know is HIGHLY rare (especially for you, because if you’ve read this far, you and I have a lot in common).

Emily makes a very good case for repeating yourself on purpose because it helps you take ownership of your ideas. Coming soon: the little trademark symbol ™ next to my catchphrase: “Your podcast should work harder than you.” And lots of repetition of those 7 words. Consider yourself warned…

(And because synergy is also a key component of any hardworking podcast: this idea of repetition as strategy came up JUST A FEW DAYS AGO with my Strategic Podcast Launch Studio cohort.)

18:16 You can keep your podcast a secret and still get (mega) value from it

Emily thinks private podcasts are about to have a moment…and I happen to agree. In fact, I think that moment may already be peeking its head up like a little podcast prairie dog looking for its people.

Listen here for Emily’s compelling case for using a short, finite private podcast as a lead magnet instead of yet another downloadable PDF. 🥱

26:00: In which I advise the advisor on how to move from “thinking about” a podcast “actually doing a podcast”

Plot twist: the email expert really does want a podcast…and to that I say: it's about frickin' time! This woman is READ-Y to step up to the mic (which she’s already purchased, by the way).

If you’re not convinced after watching/listening to this episode, definitely follow Emily on Instagram (@emilyinhamburg).

To help get Emily out of that snowbank of “ready to move forward but still spinning wheels,” I prescribed my favorite “easy mode” solution for starting a podcast.

31:00: Picture how, where, & when you fit into the lives of your ideal audience

Don’t make your audience rearrange their lives around your content. Make your content fit into theirs. (Ahem, to quote one Ms. Swift…Kelce? This is me tryinnnggggg…)

And there you have it: one podcast episode, one newsletter, five ideas worth stealing, and considerably less work/time investment for us both.

Feel free to put a moment of that saved time toward considering how a podcast might work as hard for you as mine has for me. And then…

Hit reply and tell me about it,
